02 / A — The character’s story
The child who learned she could stop smiling
How can being brought home become the beginning of a larger freedom?
The story here runs through Dressrosa.
The Sun Pirates
A frightened passenger.
As a child freed from slavery, Koala travels with Fisher Tiger and the Sun Pirates while hiding her fear behind an obedient smile. Their care slowly gives her room to respond as a child rather than someone expecting punishment for every mistake.
The journey home
Trust across an inherited divide.
Returning Koala to her home brings humans and fish-men into a painful encounter with the prejudice surrounding both communities. The kindness she receives from the pirates remains part of her story, even though the journey cannot resolve the hatred that threatens them.
The Revolutionary Army
Carrying that connection forward.
Koala later joins the revolutionaries and teaches Fish-Man Karate as an assistant instructor, working alongside Sabo and Hack. The discipline connects her adult work to the people who once protected her, turning a childhood rescue into a continuing practice of solidarity.
