02 / A — The character’s story
The work that remains after a captain falls
How do you keep caring for a family after its centre is gone?
The story here runs through the Onigashima raid.
Whitebeard’s crew
Strength in service of a family.
As Whitebeard’s first division commander, Marco fights as part of a crew whose captain calls its members his sons. His phoenix powers make him a formidable protector, but the bond he defends is larger than the strength of any single fighter.
After Marineford
Staying with what can still be protected.
Losing Whitebeard and Ace does not erase Marco’s obligations to the people they leave behind. His work as a doctor on Sphinx gives that loyalty a quieter form, caring for a community connected to his captain rather than chasing a replacement for him.
Wano
Making room for the next generation.
Marco joins the struggle in Wano and uses his strength to support the alliance against Kaido. The former commander becomes a bridge between generations, helping younger fighters reach battles they must ultimately finish themselves.
