02 / A — Before the adventure
The Promise on the Dock
Why is a straw hat worth an entire adventure?
01
The boy & the fruit
Foosha.
Luffy grew up as an unruly kid in Foosha Village who wanted nothing more than to prove himself to his hero, Red-Haired Shanks. After accidentally eating the Gum-Gum Fruit and turning his body into rubber, Luffy was kidnapped by bandits and thrown into the sea.
02
The price of a promise
An arm.
When a Sea King attacked, Shanks sacrificed his own left arm to save him.
03
Something to return
The hat.
Before sailing away, Shanks placed his prized straw hat on Luffy’s head, telling him to return it only after becoming a great pirate.
04
A life of freedom
Pirate King.
That single promise defines everything Luffy does: he sails not for wealth or conquest, but for the freedom to protect his friends and chase the ultimate dream of becoming the Pirate King.
