02 / A — The character’s story

The promise on the dock

What makes a borrowed hat worth a lifetime?

Story spoilers through the East Blue.

  1. Foosha Village

    Foosha Village

Luffy grew up as an unruly kid in Foosha Village who wanted nothing more than to prove himself to his hero, Red-Haired Shanks. After accidentally eating the Gum-Gum Fruit and turning his body into rubber, Luffy was kidnapped by bandits and thrown into the sea. When a Sea King attacked, Shanks sacrificed his own left arm to save him.

  2. A promise at sea

    A promise at sea

Before sailing away, Shanks placed his prized straw hat on Luffy’s head, telling him to return it only after becoming a great pirate. That single promise defines everything Luffy does: he sails not for wealth or conquest, but for the freedom to protect his friends and chase the ultimate dream of becoming the Pirate King.
