02 / A — The character’s story
Justice beyond the orders
What happens when the pirate he pursues becomes the ally he needs?
The story here runs through Punk Hazard.
Loguetown
A chase that will not stay local.
Smoker expects to stop the Straw Hats at Loguetown, where his smoke powers make escape seem impossible. Luffy survives the encounter, and the officer follows him into the Grand Line with a determination that carries the pursuit far beyond his original post.
Alabasta
Seeing who saved the country.
In Alabasta, the chase brings Smoker into a crisis that the government’s own Warlord has helped create. The Straw Hats become essential to saving the kingdom, forcing his commitment to justice to coexist with a debt to pirates.
Punk Hazard
An uneasy common cause.
On Punk Hazard, Smoker finds himself cooperating with Luffy and Law against a danger that threatens pirates and Marines alike. The alliance does not end his pursuit; it shows why he must judge what is happening in front of him as well as the uniform someone wears.
