02 / A — The character’s story
A life imagined beyond Onigashima
How can an inherited ideal become a choice of one’s own?
The story here runs through Yamato’s alliance with the raiders on Onigashima.
Oden’s example
An enemy’s life becomes an ideal.
Witnessing Oden’s death leads Yamato to embrace the dream of freeing Wano from Kaido. Reading Oden’s journal gives that admiration a world beyond Onigashima, even as defying Kaido brings confinement rather than freedom.
A connection beyond the island
The friend who reaches the prison.
During that confined life, Yamato befriends the visiting Ace, forming a connection with someone who has travelled beyond Kaido’s control. The friendship gives the outside world a personal meaning alongside the adventures recorded in Oden’s journal.
The raid
Choosing a side.
When the Straw Hats challenge Kaido, Yamato joins their struggle to free Wano. Fighting alongside them turns admiration for Oden into action against the parent whose rule has kept that dream out of reach.
