02 / A — The character’s story
Learning to speak while afraid
When does a frightened boy become the Marine he hoped to be?
The story here runs through Marineford.
Alvida’s ship
A dream said aloud.
Koby begins in Alvida’s service, too frightened to act on his wish to join the Marines. Meeting Luffy gives him the courage to say what he wants, and leaving that ship becomes his first act of commitment to a different life.
Training
Making the promise practical.
After enlisting, Koby trains under Garp alongside Helmeppo, turning an improbable ambition into daily work. His friendship with a pirate remains part of his story, even as he learns the strength and discipline needed to stand on the opposite side.
Marineford
The courage to interrupt.
At Marineford, Koby speaks out when the continuing battle is costing lives after its purpose has already changed. He risks being killed by his own side, and Shanks’s intervention allows the frightened recruit’s concern for others to be heard.
