02 / A — Why he is Zoro

The Oath to the Heavens

Why does Zoro keep getting back up?

  1. 01 / The rival

    2,000+

    defeats to Kuina

Long before hunting pirates on the open sea, Zoro was a stubborn kid training in Shimotsuki Village. No matter how hard he trained, he lost over two thousand duels to Kuina, the dojo master's daughter.

  2. 02 / The promise

    One promise.

    The world’s greatest swordsman

Late one night, after their final duel with real swords, the two rivals made a sacred vow: one of them would become the greatest swordsman the world had ever seen.

  3. 03 / The sword & the vow

    Wado Ichimonji.

A name that will reach the heavens

When Kuina tragically died the very next morning, Zoro asked for her white sword, Wado Ichimonji. Clamping the hilt between his teeth, he swore to the sky that his name would become so famous it would reach her in the heavens. Every battle he fights and every wound he endures is driven by the will to honor that pact.
