02 / A — The character’s story
The brave warrior of the sea
How does a frightened storyteller find the courage to act?
The story here runs through Enies Lobby.
Syrup Village
Syrup Village
In Syrup Village, Usopp spent his youth running through the streets shouting that pirates were coming—a desperate lie to bring hope to his dying mother. When his father Yasopp sailed away with Shanks, Usopp was left with a slingshot, tall tales, and a lonely heart, spending his afternoons telling stories to the sickly Kaya to make her smile.
Courage at sea
Courage at sea
When Captain Kuro plotted to destroy the village, Usopp stood firmly on the slope to defend his home despite trembling in absolute terror. Welcomed aboard the Going Merry by Luffy, Usopp sails not because he is fearless, but because true courage means standing up for his friends even when he is scared to death.
